Back when rabbits were first domesticated, they were shoved into hutches so their poop could be washed away easily. Little did we know rabbits make amazing house pets. It may seem strange, but rabbits can be litter trained and roam the house like dogs and cats. (As long as the proper cautions are taken.) Unfortunetly, not everyone can or wants to have their rabbit roaming freely. Just remember, rabbits need at least 2 hours outside their cage a day. This will help you find a proper cage for your rabbit to live in while they can't be out.

Pens

Rabbit pens are a great, low cost housing option. You could make your rabbit pens out of NIC Storage Tower grids that you tied together with zip or cable ties or you could buy one. When you go to buy a pen, make sure it is tall enough that your furry friend can't hop out of it. Some rabbit owners prefer to use Dog Exercise pens or X-pens. They retail for about $90 new, but you can get some pretty cheap on resale websites. Pens are also great because they are modular and you can take them with you if you decide to take your rabbit outside.

Condos

Condos are my personal favorite of all the housing option for rabbits, but some times they are not the most affordable. You can buy condos pre-made or you can make your own. DIY Condos are made of the same storage grids that you can make pens out of. Just like when you make a pen, you use zip ties to connect the grids and add wood bases for levels. These cages are great because they provide more space for the rabbit and give you more floorspace in the room. If you would like to purchase a new condo, I would reccomend the Leith Petwerks Bunny Abode condos as found at:

Rabbit Rooms

Rabbit rooms are a great option for those people who have extra rooms that they can set aside for their rabbits. The rabbits can roam the entire bunny proof room and it gives them lots of extra space. Rabbit rooms also can be fun for the owners because they can decorate the room to whatever theme they want. Make sure you bunny proof by putting away electrical cords, blocking off chew areas, putting curtans and blinds up, etc.

Rabbit Shed

Rabbit sheds are a controversial topic. Some believe that rabbits should only be kept indoors. In fact, a lot of rescues will not adopt out to owners who aren't housing the rabbit inside. I believe that rabbits can be kept outdoors as long as the following conditions are met:

  • You should have more than one rabbit, as rabbits are very sociable and odds are they will not get as much human interaction.

  • You should have a completely secure shed as rabbits are prey animals.

  • You should live in a mild climate that doesn't have extreme seasons, ESPECIALLY SUMMER!

  • You should have a run attached to the shed so the rabbits can get fresh air.
